India Tractor Sales Surge 29% in March 2026 — Mahindra Leads as Industry Crosses 1.03 Lakh Units
India's domestic tractor industry posted a sharp 29.08% year-on-year growth in March 2026, with total wholesale volumes reaching 1,03,193 units — up from 79,939 units in March 2025. The surge was driven by buoyant rural sentiment, improved farm incomes, and the full Navratri season falling entirely within March this year, which boosted buying activity across key agricultural states.
The milestone caps a strong FY 2025-26 for the Indian tractor sector, with full-year domestic sales reaching approximately 11.6 lakh units — crossing the 1 million-unit mark that industry leaders had set as a benchmark goal. This represents a 23.47% growth over FY25, according to data from the Tractor and Mechanisation Association (TMA).
"FY26 was a strong year for tractor sales, with volumes crossing 1.03 million units and growing over 18.5% year-on-year."
Brand-Wise Performance: Who Led the Market?
Mahindra & Mahindra continued its dominant position, recording its highest-ever annual domestic sales at 5,05,930 units in FY26 — a 24% year-on-year jump. In March alone, Mahindra sold 43,403 units, a 33% rise over the same month last year. The Swaraj Division, which is part of Mahindra, added another strong showing to the overall group performance.

What Drove the March 2026 Surge?
Industry analysts point to a convergence of factors. Reservoir levels across key farming states remained healthy going into the Rabi harvest season. Rural incomes improved on the back of strong Minimum Support Prices (MSP) and favorable crop pricing, giving farmers greater purchasing power. Additionally, the complete Navratri festival falling within March — unlike the previous year when it was split across two months — created a strong buying window that manufacturers capitalised on effectively.
TAFE Limited posted the highest single-brand growth in March, clocking a 37.4% surge and registering record annual sales of approximately 2,14,951 units in FY26. The company attributed this to a robust product portfolio and deeper farmer engagement, especially among first-time buyers.
What This Means for Farmers Ahead of Kharif 2026
High sales volumes mean dealer stocks are active and competitive financing offers are available now. Farmers planning tractor purchases ahead of the Kharif 2026 sowing season (June–July) should compare models and lock in current prices before TREM V emission norm price revisions — which could increase tractor costs by 10–20% — take full effect.
Outlook: What's Next for FY27?
While FY26 ended on a high note, the road ahead carries some caution. Industry experts flag geopolitical uncertainties and the possibility of a below-average monsoon in 2026 as key risks. However, firm crop prices, rising farm mechanisation rates, and ongoing improvements in tractor specifications are expected to support steady demand through FY27.
The implementation of TREM V emission norms, which mandate stricter particulate matter and NOx limits for tractor engines, is expected to push up prices in the coming months. Farmers and buyers looking to purchase before these revisions kick in fully may find current pricing an advantage.
India remains the world's largest tractor market by volume, accounting for nearly half of global annual tractor sales. The FY26 performance — crossing 11.6 lakh units — reinforces that position and signals strong underlying demand for agricultural mechanisation across the country.
